What is a Bernedoodle Dog?
A Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle (usually a Standard or Mini). The combination of the gentle, affectionate nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle, makes for a wonderful pet to own!
People love adding a Bernedoodle to their family because of their allergy friendly coats, loyalty and intelligence, and their family friendly temperaments.
What is a Bernedoodle's Temperament?
Bernedoodles are friendly and social. They love being around people and will bond closely with their family, you may find that you have a little shadow once you bring your Bernedoodle puppy home! They thrive on attention from their owners and are very affectionate towards them. Bernedoodles are quick learners, very trainable, and enjoy mental stimulation. Standard Bernedoodles tend to be calmer, while the mini Bernedoodles tend to have more energy.
Are Bernedoodles Hypoallergenic?
No dog is truly hypoallergenic, but some allergy sufferers fare better around certain dog breeds than others. Bernedoodles are considered an allergy friendly dog breed due to their poodle coat. Bernedoodle coats can vary from curly, wavy, to straight. Curly coats shed the least while straight coats will shed more, with wavy being somewhere in the middle. Regulary brushing and monthly bathing can help reduce the allergies from your Bernedoodle's coat.
Sheepadoodle vs. Bernedoodle and Labradoodle vs. Bernedoodle
Sheepadoodles are also a poodle cross, with the other half being an Old English Sheepdog. Sheepadoodles tend to be more energetic and playful requiring a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. They are social and highly intelligent. Bernedoodles enjoy going on walks, but have a generally more laid back energy level when compared to a Sheepadoodle. Both Sheepadoodles and Bernedoodles are wonderful with kids, and while Sheepadoodles love to be the center of attention, Bernedoodles tend to be a bit more reserved around new people.
Labradoodles are also a poodle cross, this time with a Labrador Retriever. Labradoodles are energetic, outgoing, and eager to please. They are very trainable and highly energetic - they need a lot of playtime and activity! They are typically very friendly, even with strangers while Bernedoodles are a bit more reserved with new people. Labradoodles are great for families with active households. Bernedoodles are great for families wanting a calmer dog while still enjoying plenty of playtime!
Bernedoodle Grooming Requirements
Bernedoodles will need continual grooming to keep their coat free of mats and tangles. Brushing them 3-5 times a week, especially around their ears and behind their ears, and around their collar will keep their coat looking nice. The best brush for Bernedoodles is a slicker brush or metal comb. This will help reach all layers of their coat. In addition to their weekly grooming they will need professional grooming every 6-8 weeks to get a bath, haircut, nail trim, ear cleaning, and paw pad trim. Bernedoodle grooming styles are "teddy bear" or "puppy cut" for easy maintenance. While curly coat types are more allergy friendly, their grooming is more demanding. Shorter coats will make the daily brushing go quicker.
